TIPS FOR WINTERIZING YOUR HOME
Free Brochure Available to Connecticut Homeowners
Meriden CT - November 13, 2002 - "The time to winterize your home is before the cold weather really sets in," according to Ron Licata, President of Connecticut Life & Casualty Insurance. "But performing a few simple steps around the house now, can save time, money and a lot of stress later on."
The auto and homeowner insurer is sending its customers a brochure, "Winterizing Your Home," with helpful tips, but is also making the information available to homeowners throughout the state. The free brochure offers tips in ten different categories that range from saving money on heating to important safety hazards that come with cold weather. Mr. Licata advised several precautions and suggestions:
Indoors:
Never use a kerosene heater. If a space heater is needed, use only an enclosed heating element product with an approval label from an independent testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories.
Have chimneys used for wood burning stoves and fireplaces checked for creosote build up. This tar-like substance can lead to a chimney fire.
Weather strip windows and doors to maximize your heating efficiency
Make sure your attic has insulation with an R-value of at least 45. Nearly half of a home's heat loss is through the roof.
Have a professional check your home heating system both for energy conservation and carbon monoxide. Buy a carbon monoxide detector for any nearby living spaces.
Outdoors:
Clean gutters of debris and fall leaves to prevent water damage from backed up water and ice.
Swimming pools should be winterized to the manufacturers recommended pH level and chlorine. Disconnect and store any slides or diving boards and secure the fence and gate around the pool.
Drain exterior faucets and insulate exposed faucets and pipes.
