WATER CONSERVATION TIPS
Free Brochure Available to Connecticut Homeowners
Meriden CT - March 19, 2002 - With one of Connecticut's driest winters on record coming to an end, there is a growing need for water conservation. Fortunately, there are several steps homeowners can take that are both easy to do and virtually cost-free.
There are many ways to rein in water use, but according to Ron Licata, President of Connecticut Life & Casualty, there is one main culprit. "Nearly 75% of home water use occurs in the bathroom," Licata noted. "We can each save hundreds of gallons of water a week with very little effort." He urged homeowners to call for a copy of a free brochure, "Home Water Conservation," that has practical tips for saving water both inside and outside the house, and offered a few of its suggestions:
Reducing the time in the shower and using the water to wet down and rinse off only, can save up to 7 gallons of water a minute.
Filling the bathtub halfway can save up to 15 gallons.
If you don't already have a low-flow toilet, place a brick in the water tank to reduce water use.
Insulate all hot water pipes to reduce the time to get hot water running from the tap.
Keep a container of water in the refrigerator so you don't have to run the water to make it cold.
Closely trimmed grass makes the roots work harder and draw more water. Do not mow the lawn below 3-inches.
Using a layer of mulch around plants reduces evaporation and the need to water them as frequently.
